Tata Nexon 45: Charging Cost Analysis

I’ve been driving my Nexon EV Empowered 45 for the last 3 months and covered 14,572 km. When we were buying it, my wife said EV running cost will be much cheaper. I didn’t fully believe it.

Now obviously I won’t admit she was right… but I quietly started tracking everything.

Here’s the breakdown.

Vehicle Details

  • Battery: 45 kWh
  • Efficiency: 122 Wh/km
  • Total Distance (3 months): 14,572 km
  • Total Energy Consumed: 1,777.78 kWh

Road Trip (1,279 km)

  • Energy used: 156.04 kWh (I am assuming the same efficiency to calculate the total energy used)
  • Charging sessions: 4 DC + 1 AC (AC charging was at the hotel I was staying. I charged using the portable charger)
  • DC Fast Charging Cost - ₹2874.48
  • AC Charging (Hotel) - ₹500
  • Total Road Trip Charging - ₹3,374

Regular Home Charging

  • Energy charged into battery: 1,621.74 kWh
  • Charging losses assumed: 11.5%
  • Grid units drawn: ~1,807 kWh
  • Electricity rate: ₹4.5 per unit
  • Total home charging cost: ₹8,137

Total Charging Cost

  • ₹11,511.48
  • ₹0.79 per km

Now for comparison. If I had driven 14,572 km in a petrol car with an average running cost of ₹8/km:

  • 14,572 × 8 = ₹1,16,576
  • Actual EV spend: ₹11,511
  • Savings in 3 months: ₹1,05,000 approx

I’m not saying my wife was right. But I’ve stopped arguing.

1.05L in just 14.5k kilometers is just amazing. Service cost will be way less too.

Great savings! 10-12% energy loss is expected. Do you use portable charger at home as well?

Savings are immense in an EV.
