Range Rover has confirmed its fifth model line, and it's arriving with two firsts attached: the brand's first grand tourer, and its first all-electric Range Rover built on the EMA platform. Called the Range Rover GT, it joins the Range Rover, Sport, Velar and Evoque as the marque works toward offering fully electric versions of every model before 2030.

What's inside

Land Rover has given the first proper look inside the car, rather than another silhouette teaser. The headline points:

  • A single wide display replaces the traditional gauge cluster, paired with a separate driver screen
  • A concealed air vent runs the full width of the dashboard, a design signature Range Rover has carried across recent models
  • A woven textile dash panel wraps the cabin in one continuous piece and hides the speakers within its form
  • Second-row legroom is being pitched as class-leading, reinforcing the long-distance, chauffeur-friendly brief a GT badge implies
  • The stated design goal throughout: less visual and acoustic noise, and more of the car's functions reachable by voice

Electric first, hybrid to follow, and why that's a bigger deal than it sounds

The GT will launch as a battery-electric vehicle, built at Halewood alongside Range Rover's combustion and hybrid models, with a full hybrid variant planned for later in its life cycle rather than at launch.

That sequencing is worth pausing on. EMA was originally pitched by JLR as a dedicated, pure-electric platform — distinct from the multi-powertrain MLA architecture that underpins today's Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. JLR confirmed only last month that EMA is being opened up to full hybrids as well, and the GT's own hybrid roadmap, tucked into this release, is the clearest evidence yet of that shift actually happening.

A grand tourer, Range Rover style

Range Rover Managing Director Martin Limpert framed the car as blending EV performance with all-terrain capability that, in his words, "no conventional GT can match." That's the needle the GT has to thread: grand tourers have traditionally been road-focused, low-slung cars built for effortless motorway miles, while Range Rover's identity rests on going anywhere, tarmac or not.

A clue to how it's being resolved: Land Rover's own description of the camouflaged prototypes calls out a “sleek silhouette and coupé proportions”, the clearest hint yet that the GT will lean further into a road-focused, fastback-like stance than any Range Rover before it. That's a genuine departure for a brand built around upright, boxy proportions, and it raises the real open question: whether that shape coexists comfortably with genuine off-road capability, or comes at its expense.

Reading the camouflage

Prototypes are currently on final on-road testing, wrapped in a gold camouflage pattern designed in-house and based on the topography around Gaydon, home to Range Rover's design and engineering teams. It's a small detail, but a deliberate one, Land Rover is using the wrap itself to signal "grand touring" and "journey" as the car's core narrative, months before any performance figures, range numbers, or pricing exist.

Why it matters

The GT's arrival says as much about strategy as styling. Range Rover is using its newest, most design-forward model, and its highest-margin, most image-conscious segment, to lead its electrification push, rather than easing EVs in through a lower-priced model first. If the GT lands as promised, it will be a signal of how confident the brand is that electric range and performance no longer need to be compromised to sit alongside a Range Rover badge.
