Hero MotoCorp is working on something exciting in the electric vehicle space. Recent design patents filed in India suggest that the Vida NEX 2, a unique leaning electric trike, is moving closer to becoming a real production model.
What Makes the NEX 2 Special?
The standout feature of the NEX 2 is its leaning twin-wheel front suspension. According to the design patents and reports, this system allows the vehicle to tilt into corners similar to a conventional two-wheeler, while the additional front wheel is intended to provide greater stability compared to traditional three-wheelers.
The patent images show the production design remains very close to the futuristic concept Hero showed at EICMA 2025. It has:
- A bold, wide front with dual wheels
- Sharp LED headlights
- A tall windscreen for better protection
- Sporty alloy wheels
- A compact rear design
- Handy front storage space
It is also expected to include self-balancing technology, so the vehicle stays upright at traffic lights without the rider needing to put their feet down.
Comparison with Other Vida Novus Models
The Vida Novus portfolio, unveiled at EICMA 2025, includes three distinct concepts:
- NEX 1: A compact, foldable, stand-on personal mobility device, more like a smart personal carrier than a traditional scooter. It is designed for very short distances and easy carrying.
- NEX 2 (the trike): A proper riding vehicle with leaning capability and three wheels, aimed at daily urban commuting with better stability and fun factor.
- NEX 3: A small, enclosed four-wheeler microcar for all-weather protection and slightly longer trips.
Among these, the NEX 2 stands out as the most practical everyday option for Indian roads, offering a good balance between scooter-like agility and three-wheeler stability.
Expected Pricing
Since the NEX 2 is still in the development stage, Hero has not announced official prices. However, given its premium positioning, advanced leaning technology, and features, industry estimates suggest it could be priced in the range of ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh (ex-showroom) when launched. This would place it above regular electric scooters but well below four-wheeler microcars.
What We Can Expect
Hero hasn’t shared full specifications yet, but early expectations point to:
- A powerful electric motor
- A well-balanced lithium-ion battery pack, positioned low in the chassis to maintain a good centre of gravity for better handling and stability
- Real-world range of over 100 km
- Fast charging capability
- Modern features like a digital display, connected apps, regenerative braking, and software updates over the air
Who Is It For?
Hero is trying to create a new category with the NEX 2, a premium urban mobility solution that sits between regular electric scooters and bigger vehicles. It targets city riders who want the ease of a scooter but with better stability and a more modern, premium feel.
Leaning three-wheelers are not entirely new globally (Yamaha’s Niken and Piaggio’s MP3 are similar ideas), but the Vida NEX 2 could be one of the first practical, affordable options designed specifically for Indian conditions.
Launch Outlook
There is still no official launch date or price from Hero. However, the recent patent filings are a strong sign that development is progressing well. More updates are likely in the coming months.
This move shows Hero’s serious efforts to go beyond regular electric scooters and explore fresh ideas to grow its electric vehicle business in India.
