India's passenger EV market remained above 30,000 monthly registrations for the second consecutive month in July. But the state-wise data reveals an equally important trend: just five states - Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Delhi and Rajasthan, accounted for 51.6% of all passenger EV registrations.
The year-to-date picture is almost identical, with the top five contributing 51.0% of cumulative registrations between January and July. The takeaway is clear: India's passenger EV market is growing, but much of that growth remains concentrated in a handful of states.

Maharashtra Leads, Tamil Nadu Gains Ground
Maharashtra remained the country's largest passenger EV market with 4,850 registrations, representing 14.7% of national sales and posting 95.8% year-on-year growth.
The biggest movement came from Tamil Nadu, where registrations jumped 45.4% month-on-month, the highest increase among the top five states. Telangana retained third place with flat monthly volumes but continued to record strong annual growth (172% YoY).
Delhi maintained steady momentum across all time periods, while Rajasthan stood out for a different reason. It was the only state in the top five to record a slight monthly decline (-1.0%), yet posted the strongest annual growth (177.7% YoY), highlighting the difference between short-term fluctuations and longer-term adoption trends.
Karnataka Drops Out of the Monthly Top Five
The year-to-date rankings tell a slightly different story.
Karnataka replaces Rajasthan in the cumulative top five with 17,922 registrations between January and July. However, it does not feature among July's top-performing states despite recording 58.7% month-on-month growth, as other states expanded even faster.
It also recorded the only negative quarter-on-quarter change (-4.6%) among the leading states, suggesting competition among India's largest EV markets is intensifying.
What This Means
Together with ElecTree's earlier analysis on July's record passenger EV sales and India's evolving EV, hybrid and CNG mix, the state-wise data adds another layer to the story.
India's passenger EV market is not only growing, it is becoming increasingly concentrated. For automakers, charging infrastructure providers and investors, understanding where demand is growing may be just as important as tracking national sales.
The coming months will show whether Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan can sustain their momentum, and whether Karnataka regains its position among the country's leading monthly EV markets.
