Skipping PDI on Your New EV Can Cost Lakhs – Why Indian Buyers Are Now Turning to Experts Before Taking Delivery

As car and EV sales break records across India, a growing number of heartbroken owners are discovering scratches, dead 12-volt batteries, repainted panels and even degraded EV battery packs – days after celebrating their “brand new” purchase.

The reason? Most buyers trust the showroom’s quick wash-and-handover routine and skip a proper Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI).

By the time you sign the delivery challan, the dealer is legally off the hook. We’re seeing transit dents, stockyard rust, old tyres and in EVs, battery health as low as 94-95% on cars that have never been driven by a customer.

Why PDI Hits Harder in India

Cars sit for weeks and months in open yards from Chennai to Gurgaon, baking under 45°C heat or soaking in monsoon rain. Trucks carrying six to eight vehicles at a time often deliver them with roof dents, cracked windshields and scuffed bumpers that are hard to spot from ground level.

Electric vehicles bring extra risks: high-voltage battery packs can pick up scratches underneath, coolant traces go unnoticed, and prolonged storage drains the 12-volt auxiliary battery that powers everything from the infotainment to the door locks.

The Checks You Can’t Afford to Miss

Buyers who do inspect usually limit themselves to a casual walk-around. Experts say that’s not enough. Critical items include:

  • Paint thickness measurement
  • Uniform panel gaps and proper door alignment
  • Tyre tread depth and manufacturing date
  • 12-volt battery voltage (below 12.4 V spells early failure)
  • AC vent temperature using an infrared gun
  • Full functionality of every button, speaker, camera and drive mode
  • For EVs: OBD scan for battery State-of-Health (SOH), cell balance and zero error codes
  • Underbody inspection on a ramp – especially the battery pack for dents or leaks

The Rise of Independent Inspectors

With dealership staff often rushed to meet monthly targets, more buyers are paying ₹2,000-₹5,000 for third-party inspections. These services use professional tools – paint gauges, OBD scanners, thermal guns, etc -and deliver an unbiased report before the final payment is made.

In Delhi-NCR, Electree EV Solutions has quietly built a reputation for detailed EV inspections, with dozens of five-star Google reviews praising their expert checks and battery health reports. Users say the small fee saved them from accepting vehicles with repainted panels or low SOH right at the showroom.

As India races toward 30% electric vehicle sales by 2030, consumer advocates say a proper PDI – whether you do it yourself or bring in a professional – is no longer optional. It’s the difference between driving home happy and starting your ownership journey with regret.
