My Journey with EVs: Practical Insights from Years of Ownership in India
After several years of owning and driving multiple electric vehicles in India, I’ve become an advocate for EVs among my family and friends. I stay updated through online reading, WhatsApp and Telegram groups, Facebook communities, and YouTube videos. Most discussions revolve around two key topics: real-world range and best charging practices to preserve battery life and improve efficiency.
Based on my experience, range is rarely an issue for over 95% of daily usage. Most trips are under 80 km, and overnight home charging ensures the vehicle is ready each morning. Even with heavy air-conditioning or traffic, running costs remain low—typically ₹1–2 per km—compared to ₹7–10 for petrol or diesel. Efficiency can vary, but the savings are significant regardless.
Battery health depends primarily on the quality of cells chosen by the manufacturer. Basic care—avoiding regular full charges to 100% and extreme heat exposure—helps maintain longevity. Over-optimizing daily habits is unnecessary.
However, EVs require patience, especially for long-distance travel. Early outstation trips should be planned carefully: go solo or with someone understanding, build in charging stops with a 40% buffer, and use multiple apps to locate reliable chargers. Until confidence in the vehicle’s range is established, frequent top-up charging prevents unexpected delays.
DC fast charging, even at ₹25 per unit, remains cost-effective compared to fuel. Charge point operators face challenges due to low utilization and high infrastructure costs, but prices are still reasonable for users.
In summary, EVs suit those with regular access to home charging and a willingness to adapt travel habits
Very well said and written.
