Road Trip

Tata Punch EV 1150 KM Road Trip: Charger Anxiety is Real!

Sharing key takeaways from my first major road trip (Indore Circuit) in the Tata Punch EV EMP+ Long Range.
🚗 Car Performance & Range
Vehicle: Tata Punch EV EMP+ Long Range (LR).
Trip Distance: Approx. 1150 KMs (Indore -> Bhopal -> Jabalpur -> Sagar -> Indore).

Driving Experience: Overall, surreal and excellent. The car performed beautifully throughout the entire journey.

Real-World Range: Consistently achieved 200-230 KMs per charge on the highway with AC use.

🔌 The Charging Nightmare: "Charger Anxiety"
The biggest stress was "Charger Anxiety," not Range Anxiety, the worry that an 'Available' station wouldn't initiate charging.
Major Failures (JioBP & Adani): Multiple stations were listed as available but got "stuck at initiating charging" (loading circle spinning endlessly).
Customer support confirmed the stations were non-operational despite the app status.
This issue was not car-specific; a HarrierEV also failed at the same station.
JioBP and Adani likely use a similar app framework, resulting in similar poor functionality.
Family Disappointment: The constant waiting, troubleshooting, and having to move to the next station caused significant disappointment and stress for the family.

Reliable Networks

HPCL (HP) is Good. Took time to start the session, but worked 100% of the time. Reliable connection once established.

Tata Power EZ Charge. Mostly worked, but one station failed initiation.
Many stations were 30kW, a downgrade in speed that prolonged the trip.

Headache
JioBP & Adani Very Bad. Frequent failures to initiate charge despite being listed as available.

Overall Charging companies should provide reliable statuses of the charging stations rather than being experimental.

Jio and Adani have contracts to show uptime. They only. But some do not work in reality. Charger anxiety is something which needs to be fixed and your post details it perfectly. Only up and running chargers should be shown active on their respective apps. Else it is pure misleading. Did you ever went out of charge or were able to find a substitute charger nearby?

You: My safety buffer of 20% was instantly eliminated when two nearby Adani and JioBP stations failed to initiate charging, leaving me at a critical 5% charge, fearing being stranded. To reach the next station, I had to immediately conserve power by switching off the AC, disconnecting accessories, and using high L3 regeneration on highways. Upon finally arriving at the next charger (Tata Power EZ Charge), it also failed to start until I contacted their support, who remotely restarted the system. This experience confirms that Charger Anxiety, the fear of station failure, is a constant threat that can rapidly lead to genuine Range Anxiety.

Though not prevalent, the slightest of chance of this situation arising leads the anxiety. How many DC chargings have you tried and what percentage did you find faulty chargers?

On a round trip: 3 Adani's Stations of which 2 failed on me. 2 Jio Stations in which 1 gave hiccups to initiate and other one failed totally. 2 TataPowerEZ in which one didn't start initially but worked after support although 30kw 4 HP which worked all the time however took time to initiate charging. 2 Statiq which were fast to connect and charge as F. Total 10 DC chargings in full round trip.

Reviewer in this video explained exactly what I wanted to convince about chargers not initiating charging. https://youtu.be/LjVpqjL9lvY

I know how it feels like. Have faced it myself in the very beginning of my EV journey.

I can believe Adani has a problem. For Jio, can you point out the charger, we can escalate

Another thing - Please always keep a backup charger in mind, if charging doesn't work just move on. Customer care won't be able to do much
