๐Ÿ‘‰ I mean charging is easy ,but the setting up of the home charger equipment is a task especially in apartments /high rise onesย 

โœ… A lot of EV owners have questions around home charging, sanctioned load, wiring, MCB/RCD, 3-phase connections, etc.

๐Ÿ‘‰Honestly, thereโ€™s no need to overthink it! ๐Ÿ˜„ but you need to be aware of itย 

๐Ÿท๏ธ OEM / Installer Support ::

๐Ÿ‘‰ Almost every 4W-EV OEM offers home charger installation through its authorised/third-party installation partners.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Their standard installation guidelines cover :

โ€ข Charger installation

๐Ÿ‘‰ A lot of Indian homes have around 3 kWโ€“3.3 kW single-phase sanctioned load.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Remember, your EV charger isnโ€™t the only thing consuming electricity.

๐Ÿท๏ธ Your home may simultaneously have:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Geyser
๐Ÿ‘‰ Refrigerator
๐Ÿ‘‰ Fans & lights
๐Ÿ‘‰ Washing machine
๐Ÿ‘‰ Water pump๐Ÿ‘‰ Other appliances

๐Ÿท๏ธ So even if youโ€™re using a 15A / ~3.3 kW slow charger, itโ€™s sensible to consider a load enhancement of around 2โ€“3 kW depending on your householdโ€™s peak usage.
๐Ÿท๏ธ That gives you some breathing room instead of constantly worrying about exceeding your sanctioned load.

๐Ÿ”Œ How Is The Ev Charger Connected ?
๐Ÿ‘‰ The preferred arrangement is a dedicated circuit from the meter/DB to the EV charging point/wallbox.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Avoid sharing the EV charging circuit with normal household sockets.

The charger should have its own appropriate:

โœ… RCD protection
โœ… Earthing
โœ… Isolator/disconnector where required

๐Ÿ‘‰ A 7.2 kW AC charger typically draws around 32A on single phase.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Whether you can have this on single phase depends on your DISCOMโ€™s sanctioned-load and phase rules.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Some DISCOMs allow higher single-phase loads after load enhancement butย Others may require a 3-phase connection beyond a particular sanctioned load.

So ,check your DISCOM rules first โ€” donโ€™t assume that 7.2 kW automatically means 3-phase.
๐Ÿ”Œ Wiring โ€” Keep It Simple (future Proof)ย 

๐Ÿ‘‰ For a home EV charger, Copper is the preferred choice.

๐Ÿ‘‰ 11 kW 3-phase: 6 sq mm Cu can be adequate, but 10 sq mm Cu gives more headroom/future-proofing (my plan in my house later )ย 

โš ๏ธ BUT: Cable size shouldnโ€™t be selected only from charger power.
For a long cable run โ€” say 40โ€“50 metres โ€” voltage drop becomes important.

Thatโ€™s where I would personally go bigger.

๐Ÿท๏ธ For a long-term, future-proof installation:

DB โ†’ 10 sq mm Copper โ†’ EV Charger

๐Ÿ‘‰ This gives you additional headroom for future charging requirements, subject to the actual installation method and protection design.

Ideally include:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Dedicated circuit
๐Ÿ‘‰ Proper conduit/trunking
๐Ÿ‘‰ Correctly sized MCB/RCBO
๐Ÿ‘‰ 30 mA residual-current protection๐Ÿ‘‰ Proper protective earthing
๐Ÿ‘‰ No household socket sharing
๐Ÿ‘‰ Properly rated isolator/disconnector where required
๐Ÿ‘‰ Weatherproof equipment if installed outdoors

๐Ÿท๏ธ For a 3.3 kW / ~15A charger:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Typically around 20A MCB/RCBO๐Ÿ‘‰ 30 mA RCD protection

๐Ÿท๏ธ For a 7.2 kW / ~32A charger:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Commonly around 40A MCB/RCBO
๐Ÿ‘‰ 30 mA RCD protection

โš ๏ธ The exact protection arrangement should always follow the EVSE manufacturerโ€™s installation requirements.


๐Ÿ‘‰ Many modern EVSEs use Type-A 30 mA RCD/RCBO protection with appropriate DC leakage detection/protection, but donโ€™t blindly specify a device without checking what the particular charger requires.

๐Ÿ”‘ The Simple Takeaway ::

๐Ÿซต๐Ÿป EV home charging isnโ€™t rocket science!

๐Ÿท๏ธ 3.3 kW charger โ†’ existing connection may be usable, but load enhancement gives you breathing room.

๐Ÿท๏ธ 5โ€“7.2 kW โ†’ load enhancement may be enough; 3-phase depends on your DISCOM.

๐Ÿท๏ธ 11 kW โ†’ generally a 3-phase setup.

Long cable run โ†’ donโ€™t compromise on cable sizing; calculate voltage drop.
