Home Ev Charging โ Is IT Really Complicated ?ย
๐ I mean charging is easy ,but the setting up of the home charger equipment is a task especially in apartments /high rise onesย

A lot of EV owners have questions around home charging, sanctioned load, wiring, MCB/RCD, 3-phase connections, etc.
๐Honestly, thereโs no need to overthink it! ๐ but you need to be aware of itย
๐ท๏ธ OEM / Installer Support ::
๐ Almost every 4W-EV OEM offers home charger installation through its authorised/third-party installation partners.
๐ Their standard installation guidelines cover :
โข Cable sizing
โข Protection devices
โข Earthing
โข MCB/RCCB/RCBO
โข Charger installation
โข Safety requirements
๐ท๏ธ You can also ask the OEMโs installer + your own electrician to coordinate the installation.
๐ซต๐ป In short โ nothing to worry about!
โก๏ธ What About Your Existing Connection ?ย
๐ A lot of Indian homes have around 3 kWโ3.3 kW single-phase sanctioned load.
๐ Remember, your EV charger isnโt the only thing consuming electricity.
๐ท๏ธ Your home may simultaneously have:
๐ AC
๐ Geyser
๐ Refrigerator
๐ Fans & lights
๐ Washing machine
๐ Water pump๐ Other appliances
๐ท๏ธ So even if youโre using a 15A / ~3.3 kW slow charger, itโs sensible to consider a load enhancement of around 2โ3 kW depending on your householdโs peak usage.
๐ท๏ธ That gives you some breathing room instead of constantly worrying about exceeding your sanctioned load.
๐ How Is The Ev Charger Connected ?
๐ The preferred arrangement is a dedicated circuit from the meter/DB to the EV charging point/wallbox.
๐ Avoid sharing the EV charging circuit with normal household sockets.
The charger should have its own appropriate:

RCD protection
โ
Earthing
โ
Isolator/disconnector where required
โก๏ธ Do I Need 3-Phase For 7.2 kW ?
๐ท๏ธ Not necessarily or may beย
๐ A 7.2 kW AC charger typically draws around 32A on single phase.
๐ Whether you can have this on single phase depends on your DISCOMโs sanctioned-load and phase rules.
๐ Some DISCOMs allow higher single-phase loads after load enhancement butย Others may require a 3-phase connection beyond a particular sanctioned load.
So ,check your DISCOM rules first โ donโt assume that 7.2 kW automatically means 3-phase.
๐ Wiring โ Keep It Simple (future Proof)ย
๐ For a home EV charger, Copper is the preferred choice.
๐ท๏ธ As a broad practical reference:
๐ 3.3 kW: Minimum ~4 sq mm Cu
๐ 7.2 kW: Minimum ~6 sq mm Cu
๐ 11 kW 3-phase: 6 sq mm Cu can be adequate, but 10 sq mm Cu gives more headroom/future-proofing (my plan in my house later )ย
โ ๏ธ BUT: Cable size shouldnโt be selected only from charger power.
For a long cable run โ say 40โ50 metres โ voltage drop becomes important.
Thatโs where I would personally go bigger.

๐ท๏ธ For a long-term, future-proof installation:
DB โ 10 sq mm Copper โ EV Charger
๐ This gives you additional headroom for future charging requirements, subject to the actual installation method and protection design.
Ideally include:
๐ Dedicated circuit
๐ Proper conduit/trunking
๐ Correctly sized MCB/RCBO
๐ 30 mA residual-current protection๐ Proper protective earthing
๐ No household socket sharing
๐ Properly rated isolator/disconnector where required
๐ Weatherproof equipment if installed outdoors
๐ก๏ธ Protection Devicesย :
๐ท๏ธ For a 3.3 kW / ~15A charger:
๐ Typically around 20A MCB/RCBO๐ 30 mA RCD protection
๐ท๏ธ For a 7.2 kW / ~32A charger:
๐ Commonly around 40A MCB/RCBO
๐ 30 mA RCD protection
โ ๏ธ The exact protection arrangement should always follow the EVSE manufacturerโs installation requirements.
๐ Many modern EVSEs use Type-A 30 mA RCD/RCBO protection with appropriate DC leakage detection/protection, but donโt blindly specify a device without checking what the particular charger requires.
๐ The Simple Takeaway ::
๐ซต๐ป EV home charging isnโt rocket science!
๐ท๏ธ 3.3 kW charger โ existing connection may be usable, but load enhancement gives you breathing room.
๐ท๏ธ 5โ7.2 kW โ load enhancement may be enough; 3-phase depends on your DISCOM.
๐ท๏ธ 11 kW โ generally a 3-phase setup.
Long cable run โ donโt compromise on cable sizing; calculate voltage drop.
